EverydAI Proverbs started off as my wife’s idea to create a physical Proverbs calendar featuring artwork she drew for each chapter. I thought to myself, “this could work as a digital product as well!” At this point, I had very little application development experience, but knew my way around programming for data science and machine learning. I had just completed a certificate course on artificial intelligence and felt confident in trying to use my new skills to build an app to help encourage users to develop a habit of contemplative Holy Scripture reading.

I started researching the process of developing an iOS app - Xcode, Flutter, backend servers, large language model APIs, Next.js for this site, and so on. The process was not as straightforward as I imagined at the beginning, but soon enough I had a working prototype. Then it was a matter of adding one feature at a time, fixing bugs, optimizing performance, and with help from my wife, perfecting the UX/UI and layout.

EverydAI Proverbs uses large language models to provide chat and text-to-speech functionality - Mistral for the chat, and Lemonfox TTS for text-to-speech. The app currently only uses these two AI services, but I am interested in developing a feature to allow users to select additional models.

Artificial intelligence is quickly permeating through all our apps, websites, and businesses, and the jury is still out on exactly how AI will impact society in the coming years.

My choice to add AI functionality to a simple Proverbs reading app is in the hopes that AI technology, even if it’s just for a brief period of time, may be used to help people in a positive manner through the study of the Book of Proverbs. Hidden beneath and in between the hundreds of verses are seeds of truth that are especially relevant for Christians in this chaotic time.

Now that our minds are bombarded daily with so many competing pieces of content, it may be difficult to slow down and meditate on a Scripture like the Book of Proverbs. The AI chat is designed to bring forth the meaning of Proverbs in a way that is modern and unique. Instead of simply explaining a verse or analytically describing a concept, the AI chat will guide users to think about the text in a solemn and contemplative way.
